Tag the Base Not the Runner
When we look at a non-force out on the bases, there are a few things the infielder needs to know when making the tag. The first mistake young infielders make on a tag play is, they go after the runner. What we want to do is tag the base not the runner. I want you to think about what the runner is trying to do. I teach base runners that their #1 goal is always get to the next base. The runner has to touch 2nd base before they can go to 3rd base, that’s the rule. So i…

Balance as a Baseball Player
If you read my last article you already know my beliefs on balance as an athlete and how the feet and the head are key balance points. As well as my belief that balance is maintaining complete control of the body relative to gravity pulling you down. So lets talk about balance as a baseball player.
I will talk briefly about pitching balance but I will let Coach Juan write about it more in detail in the future. He is the mastermind when it comes to balance while pi…

Balance As An Athlete
Balance is a term we use in Baseball ASAP consistently. It is the one thing that every athlete has to have in order to be successful. If an athlete loses balance they lose control, power, and accuracy. It doesn’t matter what sport you play balance is a very important issue.
So what is balance?
My definition of balance: Having complete control of your body relative to gravity pulling you down.
This means that every sport you play will have different aspects of balance b…

THE 3 CATCHERS STANCES
There are three basic catchers stances. There is the sign stance, the receiving stance with no runners on base, and the receiving stance with runners on. The most important concept to all these stances is that the catcher is comfortable to make athletic plays. With all the different movements a catcher might have to make it is very important he is in a position to make strong movements. A catcher has to make close pitches look like strikes, block a ball in the dirt, throw…

Once a batter steps into the batters box he has a mental decision to make. Am I going to step in with confidence or am I going to step in the box with fear? It is very natural for a hitter to be fearful or doubtful when there is a dominating pitcher on the hill. It is also natural for a hitter to gain a ton of confidence when there is a weaker pitcher on the hill, especially when the hitters before him are already hitting him pretty good. So what does this tell us, I think it means our opponent,…

MOUND ETIQUETTE
Mound Etiquette
Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of pitching on numerous mounds of all different shapes and sizes. My favorite was the mound at Cheney Stadium, home of the
Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle Mariners AAA Affiliate). When I pitched there, it felt like I was standing two feet higher than the batters. The best attribute of Tacoma’s mound was the slope. The angle created from the mound all…

“THERE ARE NO PLATEAUS”
BaseballASAP Chief Hitting and Catching Instructor Caleb Allen explains the importance for all players to continue to trying to improve.
“There are no plateaus” is a slogan my father used to say to me day in and day out throughout my years. I also heard him tell the speech in his change of command and retirement speeches in the Navy. I would overhear him tell it to some of his junior officers as well. The bottom line is that this phrase works for every single situation…
